Change Makers – Are We?

Education
plays an important role in creating knowledge, in bringing about changes. It is
through education, knowledge, information the world leaders were able to bring
about change, an evolution of movement for freedom. In today’s world when the literacy
rate is so high, people should have been able to bring about greater changes.
When we can access to information though different medium, we can bring about
revolutionary changes. But rather than that, the institutions, society is
limiting the thoughts of students and teaching us to learn only to earn money.
How
many parents are still encouraging the students to follow their dreams? More
than that, how many of them are letting their kids to dream? They just force them
to study. Study and score marks. They want their kids either to be an engineer
or a doctor. The number of engineering institutions is increasing. In colleges,
they offer courses that are commercial, courses that have hopes of jobs and hope
earning well. Through this system of education, the thought process of students
has got limited.
Today,
students read only to pass exams. They read only to score. After reading for
exams, if the same question is asked for the next day or next semester, they
fail to answer it. What are they
learning then? it’s only the degree certificates the students are managing to
get from institutions. Institutions are just providing certificates without exposing
the students to the reality. Bringing up students in a comfort zone, due to
which students are attuned to comfort at every level of work, task rather than
working to earn it.
I
had an opportunity to meet Padmavathi Rao, the well-known theatre artist,
sister of Arundathi Nag, during 9thBangalore International Film Festival. My
conversation with her made me realise about the education system of our
country. This is the education system introduced by the Britishers ages ago to
create workers who can read, follow the instructions of officers. This was the
education system meant to create clerks for British companies. Hence, is our education system limited to teach
contents that are in book only? We are reading for the sake of passing exams.
Not to gain knowledge. How can we turn to be the change makers when this is the
condition of our education?
